Definition

• Carbide rods are solid cylindrical rods made from cemented carbide, primarily used for cutting tools and wear-resistant applications.

Material Composition

• Made from tungsten carbide (WC) particles bonded with cobalt (Co) or sometimes nickel (Ni).

• Typical composition: 90–94% tungsten carbide + 6–10% cobalt binder.

Manufacturing Process

• Produced using powder metallurgy:

  • Mixing WC powder with binder

  • Pressing into rod shape

  • Sintering at high temperature to form a dense, hard material

Structure

• Dense and fine-grained microstructure

• Provides high hardness and wear resistance
